Home Energy Audits from the Home Efficiency Experts in Central New York

Most Central New York homes lose heat through gaps you cannot see. We find them with a hands-on inspection, using tools like a blower door when your home allows it, then walk you through what we found and what to fix first. The audit is always free.

What gets inspected

Pick a part of your house and learn what we check there

  • Insulation depth and coverage
  • Attic hatch, bypasses and knee walls
  • Roof and attic ventilation

How we check it

We check insulation depth and coverage on the walkthrough and look for where heat is getting past the attic floor.

Attic with deep blown-in insulation, baffles at the eaves and a sealed plumbing vent
  • Exterior walls and outlets
  • Windows and window frames
  • Entry and patio doors

How we check it

We look over the walls, outlets, window frames and doors for where cold air is getting in.

  • Basement and crawlspace
  • Rim joists and sill plate

How we check it

The rim joist is the usual culprit for cold floors. We check it, along with the sill plate, on the walkthrough.

  • Heating and cooling equipment
  • Ductwork and registers
  • Bathroom and kitchen ventilation

How we check it

We note the equipment and the duct runs, though the fix is usually in the envelope rather than the furnace.

  • Twelve to twenty-four months of National Grid bills

How we check it

Before we arrive. The bills tell us what the house is spending so we can show you where the savings are.

Questions

Questions Central New York homeowners ask us

Is a home energy audit worth it on a 1960s house?

That is the housing stock where it pays off most. Raised ranches and split levels from that era were built before air sealing was a trade, and they commonly test between ten and twenty ACH50 when ENERGY STAR for this zone is seven or under. The audit tells you which of those gaps is actually costing you.

Is the audit free?

Yes, always. There is no charge for the audit and no obligation. If work is needed, we give you a written estimate and tell you which rebate programs apply.

How long does it take, and do I have to be home?

One to two hours on-site for most houses. You should be home, because the walkthrough is where you tell us which rooms bother you and we show you what we are finding.

Will you try to sell me windows?

We install windows, and we will tell you when windows are not your problem. If the answer is an attic hatch and a rim joist, that is what we will tell you.

What is a good blower door number for a Central New York house?

Lower is tighter. A pre-1990 house here often reads ten to twenty ACH50. ENERGY STAR for this climate zone is seven or under. Anything over twenty and you can usually feel it without a gauge.

How much can I actually save?

NYSERDA states that implementing the recommended upgrades from an assessment typically cuts a home's energy use by five to thirty percent. Your number depends on what the audit finds and how much of the work you do.

Do I need an audit before I can get NYSERDA rebates?

Yes, for the programs that matter here. EmPower+ and Comfort Home both begin with an assessment by a participating contractor, and the assessment is what the incentive is calculated from.

What about my furnace?

We look at the mechanicals and the ductwork and tell you what we see, but we do not sell heating equipment. If you are replacing a furnace or adding a heat pump, sealing the envelope first means the new system can be sized smaller.

When is the best time of year to do this?

Any time. Booking in autumn means the work lands before the heating season instead of during it.
